When you make your living swimming, biking, and running, what you use on race day is almost as important as how you train. For the top male pros at this year’s Ironman World Championships in Kona, everything has to be a perfect fit because they’ll be competing against the best of the best.

While the pro bikes of this year’s Ironman World Championship are (mostly) tricked out beyond what the average-age grouper would ride, smaller gear items like goggles, helmets, and running shoes are (mostly) within reach to the everyday athlete. Want to build a kit like your favorite pro triathlete? We got a special opportunity to take a close look at the race-day goggles, the race-day helmet, and the race-day running shoes that the fastest long-course athletes in the world have chosen for the demanding course in Kona.

Take a look at race-day gear from Kristian Blummenfelt, Gustav Iden, Ben Kanute, and more.

On race day, American Ben Kanute will be using a Rudy Project Wing Dream helmet, Magic5 goggles (tint depending on race-morning conditions), and Hoka Rocket X2 shoes. Kanute will also be riding an all-American Trek Speed Concept – check out his race bike here.

To complement the Cadex Tri bike he’ll be riding (see more about that setup here), Kristian Blummenfelt will wear a custom-painted Giant Rivet TT helmet. On the run, he’ll be using a pair of On Cloudboom Strike LS shoes.

Gustav Iden may have finally joined the disc brake revolution with the Giant Trinity Advanced SL he’ll ride in Kona this weekend, but that doesn’t mean he favors old-school gear. With that in mind, Iden will be using an unnamed prototype full-face aero helmet from Giant with a pair of On Cloudboom Strike LS shoes.

The top American at last year’s Ironman World Championship will look to improve on his fourth-place standing — this time, with a new bike sponsor. (Check out his Factor Hanzo here.) Von Berg will be using another new sponsor, TYR, and their Valkyrie Carbon shoes, along with goggles from Magic5, and an Ekoi TT Pure.

Sam Laidlow’s Canyon Speedmax CFR may be the flashiest bike on the Kona course this year, so naturally the rest of his gear follows suit: a colorful, custom-painted new Ekoi Pure Aero helmet, Hoka Rocket X2 shoes, and Sailfish Breeze goggles.

While Cam Wurf rides his Pinarello Bollide TT through the lava fields, he’ll be sporting a Kask Mistral helmet with new Aero Pro visor (thanks to his INEOS Grenadiers team, no doubt). Also in his gear bag: a pair of Roka R1 goggles and Nike Alphafly 3s.
